Day one in sunny Bordeaux after the Noble Rot team had descended upon the home of wine late on Sunday night. On Monday we were up early to head to Chateau Lafite Rothschild, one of the First Growths and a wine of investment grade quality in all years.
We were highly impressed with Lafite's most recent offering and with its second wine, Carruades de Lafite.
From Lafite we made the short trip across sun-drenched fields of vines to Mouton Rothschild, where we tried several wines, including the Grand Vin which was excellent, as usual, and the second wine, Petit Mouton, which scored impressively highly with us all. One for us all to think about seriously as an investment once more this vintage! Here are mine and Esme's thoughts:
From there we journeyed to Hangar 14 on the river where at least 250 of the top producers in Bordeaux were showcasing their en primeur wines to taste. In this silent tasting the overall impression from he smaller satellites to the big players was of a very strong vintage, with the left bank performing best. Pape Clement, Smith Haut Lafitte and Pichon Lalande were my standout performers and all are excellent investment grade wines. Here is Esme's summary of the tasting:
A successful but busy first day was rounded off with a few negociant meetings and then a richly deserved dinner in Bordeaux! Tomorrow we look forward to lunch at Pontet Canet, always an excellent wine and one we can't wait to taste!
